King James's School

Ambition and Faculties

Faculties will support the Ambition Curriculum in four different ways:

  1. Audit of subject provision
  2. Extra-curricular opportunities and extended curriculum
  3. Competitions and challenges
  4. Our House system

  1. Audit of subject provision

Each subject area will complete an audit identifying where they deliver the Ambition agenda within the 5 ACE themes in class work and homework, for example:

AMBITION: Greatness / Aspiration / Innovation In History, students learn about Martin Luther King and other civil rights activists and how they fought against inequality and segregation.
CHARACTER: Resilience / Determination In gymnastics in PE, students are encouraged to learn new skills and practice them even when it is challenging.
CHARACTER: Inclusion / Tolerance In RE, students will learn about the different faiths and beliefs that people have in the UK.
CHARACTER: Kindness / Compassion / Nurture Language Leaders will support students who attend the weekly Blooket Club to help them to improve their understanding and skills using language.
EXCELLENCE In all subject areas: rewarding student work and celebrating student achievements regularly.

  1. Extra-curricular opportunities and extended curriculum

Faculty clubs, groups, activities, visits and visitors are central to enrichment and provision outside the classroom and staff are encouraged to source different experiences for students. The aim is to help improve the life chances of children and young people from all backgrounds, including disadvantaged backgrounds by providing additional opportunities that they wouldn’t normally have.

This includes:

  • Lunchtime or after school groups
  • Homework clubs
  • Visitors speaking to groups of students
  • Visits to places of interest

  1. Competitions and challenges

All subjects and faculties will identify at least one competition or challenge for students to take part in every academic year, for example, in 2023 – 2024, the following competitions will run in the first half term. They may be aimed at different students and year groups:

  1. Our House system

Our Performance Faculty currently supports and promotes our traditional House system based on the four Houses of Dartmouth, Fenay, Jessop and Siddon. They do this through inter-house sporting competitions.
